Hoy Day 3

Our last day in Hoy was wet and windy, but at the Hoy Lodge woods it was sheltered.
Our first activity was creating a miniature national park - each one was different and special.

A few of the parks had water features.
We made camp at the big shelter and had our lunch.
Emma and Ron got the Kelly Kettles going.

In the big shelter.!
We got busy making some forest art with the things we found around us.

Artists at work - careful where you step!

Follow the leader.
We did the blindfold obstacle course in groups of five.
Then it was time to pack up and make sure we 'left no trace' of our visit, but the next people to visit might see a few of these....

Art on the forest floor.
Muddy and tired we set off to do the final pack up and set off for the boat.
We had a think about our favourite activity,
something we learned and something we would like to do more of.

Thank you to Ron and Emma for a great trip to Hoy!

Hoy day 2

Day 2 dawned sunny and bright and the groups set off for canoeing and walking to the Old Man of Hoy.

Journey to the Bothy.
One group paddled in the burn at Rackwick while the other walked.

On the way back.
It was tempting to jump into the burn to cool off!

The Old Man in the distance on the return journey.
Tonight we have more evening activity at the Hoy Centre.
We are hoping for more good weather tomorrow!

Hoy day 1 evening activities

After dinner we went down to the beach and had a treasure hunt and tried a colour matching quiz.

Mermaid's purse/
We found plenty of human rubbish which was a danger to animals, as well as evidence that there was plenty of animal life around .

Bruck!

Birds nest in the sand.
Each group had a turn at archery. Everyone learned how to aim and shoot.

Archery as the sun goes down.
Soon it was time to go back to the Centre for supper and bedtime.
We'll sleep well tonight!

Waiting for a turn to shoot.
Looking forward to tomorrow already.

Hoy day 1

It was lovely and sunny as we set off this morning for Hoy.
Along with a few tourists we loaded our bags and waved to our mums and dads on the pier.

Goodbye Stromness! Hello Hoy!
Very soon we had arrived in Hoy, jumped in the minibuses and arrived at the Hoy Centre.
After getting our kit, we had lunch and set off for some gorge walking.

Happy gorgewalkers!
A gentle start  let everyone get used to wet feet.

Everyone helped each other.

Three points of contact.
Soon everyone was enjoying being in such a special place and seeing nature from a different perspective.
Travelling in groups.

The gorge gets steeper.
At the end of the gorge there were a couple of caves to explore before making our way back up. By then  we were experienced gorge walkers and we made quick work of getting back to the top.

Back to the Hoy Centre for dinner and a change of clothes.
This evening beach activities and archery!

Tour Guiding Costumes

Here are most of our pupils in costume, ready to give our first tour of the Earl's and Bishop's Palaces in Kirkwall. The costumes and scripts were provided by Historic Scotland. We all have to act as characters who lived in the past.

Our Buddhist Display

Here is our display on Buddhism. The brightly coloured mandalas in the centre are used as an aid to meditating. Round the edge we each wrote how we can bring light into the lives of others. At the bottom you can see a garland made by the whole class. This is worn at the Buddhist festival known as Wesak.

Tower Construction

Class 6 was divided into two groups. Each had to design and construct a tower as tall as Mr Bichan using newspaper and sticky tape. We used lots of triangles to strengthen our structures.

Inventions

Here is a group in our class working with Knex. We had to make an item from an adventure playground and this group chose a climbing frame. You can see how strong it is because there are lots of triangles in the design.

Inventions

We have been working on some ideas for inventions which would be useful, helpful or fun with Ms Mackay.
Our first task was to combine a couple of machines which already exist to create a new invention. We put a camera and a parachute together to make a 'Parashoot'; a hat and a  television together made a 'Wackyhattie'; a hot air balloon and a bicycle made a 'Bike balloon'; a rocket and a trampoline made a 'Trampo-rocket'; spectacles and a skateboard made a 'Speci-skate-vac' and a kite and a light bulb made a 'Light-my-kite'.

Next, inspired by 'The Wrong Trousers', our inventors went on to devise a full body suit which would have a  useful or fun purpose.

A spy suit with glasses that can see through walls.

A robot which will fulfil all your cleaning needs.

A flying suit for bomb dospisal and clearing minefields.

A suit for deep water marine exploration.

A mountain rescue suit with heat vision goggles for avalanche rescues.

A fun suit - it flies!
Amazing ideas! and lots more to come!

Drama Visit

The drama specialist, Mr Giles, is visiting our class on Thursdays for three weeks to do role play with the class. We have already participated in the role play of a pupil with an angry teacher, which was great fun. Here we are discussing a picture of a man in a dark street. Mr Giles takes on the role of the man in the picture and we are encouraged to write down questions to ask him.

Our Human Body Topic

In our study of the Human Body we have been looking at the respiratory (breathing) and circulatory (blood ) systems. Here are photographs of our class taking the pulse rates of the Glaitness P1 class. We also asked our penpals in Linlithgow to take their pulses during a video conference. They are P6/7s. Finally we took the pulse rates of 12 adults in the school. We drew graphs based on our results. The conclusion was that young children have a much higher pulse rate than adults. This is because they are still growing and require more energy.
